Spartan Discs was created in 2018 in the extra space of Soothing Vapors smoke shop on George Urban Boulevard. But with the help of the COVID-19 disc golf boom, the shop quickly outgrew the space that owner Kevin Keil had allocated for discs. The sport eventually took over the small Depew location and today Spartan Discs is one of the largest disc shops in upstate New York.
It was no secret that Spartan has been looking to grow.
In addition to supplying the region with discs, gear and apparel, the shop also sponsors a number of annual tournaments and has done more than almost anyone in our region to help grow the sport for new players. They are now looking to take the next step in their growth by expanding to a second location on Main Street in Tonawanda! The team at Spartan discs will bring a first of its kind disc golf experience to the first floor of the old VFW Post.
The move to Tonawanda will bring a new era of disc golf for Spartan with an increased storefront, space for team members and patrons to socialize and a permanent practice facility for players to utilize throughout the winter. According to Spartan Discs owner and WNY Ladies Virtual Putting League director Nichole Tomasello-Keil, the new site will have multiple putting stations with artificial obstacles that can be changed to help players practice. There will also be two “batting cage” style units available for use where players can safely practice drives by throwing into nets.
The new venue will also be able to host events such as putting leagues and viewing parties for pro disc golf events like PDGA Worlds and Disc Golf Pro Tour. So far the new Spartan location is set to host the WNY Ladies Virtual Putting League on Tuesday nights, as well as a mixed Spartan Putting League on Friday nights. We’ll be sure to provide more information about these events as it becomes available.
The highly anticipated new Spartan Discs shop will finally be unveiled to the public on Friday, December 2nd during Tonawanda seasonal “It's a Wonderful Night” cultural event starting at 5:00 pm. Spartan will be hosting a skills competition and offering souvenir photos and free hot chocolate for the family friendly event. “It's a Wonderful Night” is hosted by the City of Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda Local Development Corporation and highlights the
growth of small businesses in the city.
An official Spartan Discs grand open will be planned for a later date so keep an eye on Spartan Disc social media for the official date.
